The Shadow of Sorcery

For a time, a dark shadow fell upon the sacred precincts of Kodungallur. It was cast by Shankunni, the Magician, a name whispered with dread throughout the land. Feared for his mastery of dark arts and potent sorcery, Shankunni committed the ultimate sacrilege: he dared to steal the sacred offerings meant for the Goddess Bhagavathy.

Using his enchantments, Shankunni placed a Blasphemous Sacrificial Stone near the northern entrance of the temple. Through a dark rite, he successfully diverted the Nercha Kozhi  offerings of the devoted pilgrims, claiming the sanctity and power of the Goddess for his own wicked ends. The true power of the offerings could not reach the Mother.

The Arrival of the Final Oracle

The temple waited for a champion.

Then arrived Nandielath Govinda Menon (Govindamman), the young man whose spirit had been touched by the Devi in his very sleep, who was soon to be known as the Last Oracle whose Word Never Failed.

Govindamman stood before the northern gate, his eyes burning with the possessed fire of the Goddess. He saw the stone—the locus of the dark magic—and, aflame with the pure, righteous fury of Bhagavathy, he made his move.

The Toe of Divine Fury

Without a weapon, and without hesitation, Govindamman leapt forward and struck the cursed stone not with a sword, but with the bare toe of his foot.

At the instant of impact, the blasphemous structure crumbled, shattering into dust and vanquishing the sorcerer’s dark enchantment forever.

What the priests and the devout could not accomplish—what the dark arts had twisted for years—Govindamman fulfilled in a single, divine act.

From that moment forward, the offerings that rightfully belonged to Bhagavathy were eternally liberated. The Nercha Kozhi returned to the Goddess alone, ensuring that the Mother’s grace flowed freely to her devoted children. This miracle was the first public confirmation of his peerless power.

മന്ത്രവാദിയുടെ നിഴൽ

കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂർ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പവിത്രമായ പറമ്പിൽ ഒരിക്കൽ ഇരുട്ടിന്റെ നിഴൽ വീണിരുന്നു. അതിനു പിന്നിൽ നിന്നത് ശങ്കുണ്ണി എന്ന ഭീകര മന്ത്രവാദിയായിരുന്നു. ദുർമന്ത്രങ്ങളുടെയും കൂടോത്രങ്ങളുടെയും കരുത്തിൽ ദേവിക്ക് മാത്രം അർപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന വഴിപാടുകൾ സ്വന്തമാക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹം ധൈര്യപ്പെട്ടു.

ശങ്കുണ്ണി തന്റെ മന്ത്രങ്ങളുപയോഗിച്ച് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ വടക്കേ നടയിൽ ഒരു ബലിക്കല്ല് സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. ഒരു ദുർമന്ത്രവാദത്തിലൂടെ, ഭക്തർ ദേവിക്ക് സമർപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന നേർച്ചക്കോഴി വഴിപാടുകളുടെ ശക്തിയെല്ലാം തനിക്കായി മാറ്റിയെടുത്തു. വഴിപാടുകളുടെ യഥാർത്ഥ ശക്തി ദേവിയിലേക്ക് എത്താതെയായി.

വെളിച്ചപ്പാടിന്റെ വരവ്

ആ സമയത്ത്, ദേവിയുടെ നിയോഗത്താൽ, നന്ദിയേലത്ത് ഗോവിന്ദമേനോൻ — ഗോവിന്ദമ്മാമൻ അവിടെ എത്തി. ഉറക്കത്തിൽ ദേവിസാന്നിധ്യം ലഭിച്ചു, പരദേവതയുടെ അധിവേശമൂലം ക്ഷേത്രനടയിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ട ഗോവിന്ദമേനോൻ ദൈവികകൃപയിൽ നിറഞ്ഞുനിന്നിരുന്നു. ദേവിയുടെ കോപം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കണ്ണുകളിൽ സ്പുരിച്ചുനിന്നു. മന്ത്രവാദി സ്ഥാപിച്ച ആ കല്ല് അദ്ദേഹം കാവിരലാൽ എളുപ്പത്തിൽ തെറിപ്പിച്ചു കളഞ്ഞു.

ആ നിമിഷം തന്നെ, മന്ത്രവാദിയുടെ കരുത്ത് നശിച്ചു . ഭക്തർ ദേവിക്ക് അർപ്പിക്കുന്ന വഴിപാടുകളുടെ ശക്തി ഭഗവതിക്ക് ലഭിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി..

അങ്ങനെ, ദേവിയുടെ ഭക്തനായ ഗോവിന്ദമ്മാമൻ തന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ അത്ഭുതത്തിലൂടെ തന്നേ കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂരുകാരുടെ പ്രിയനും, ഭഗവതിയുടെ കോമാരപ്രമുഖനും, ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടെ ആരാധനാ പാത്രവുമായിത്തീർന്നു. വെളിച്ചപ്പാടിന്റെ കീർത്തി കൊച്ചിയുടെ അതിരുകൾക്കപ്പുറവും പരന്നു. അതിന്റെ ദൃഷ്ടാന്തം തന്നെയാണ് കൊച്ചി മഹാരാജാവ് ശ്രീമൂലം തിരുനാൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സമ്മാനിച്ച സ്വർണവീരശൃംഖല.
