The Year of Calamity

During a great flood remembered in family lore when the raging waters of the monsoon surged relentlessly, it transformed the landscape into a turbulent sea of destruction.

The floodwaters advanced, creeping up the sacred ground until they lapped at the very edges of the temple premises (Ambala Parambu). The ancient shrine of Bhagavathy, where the Goddess Kurumba resides, teetered on the brink—one relentless surge was all it would take to sweep the temple and all its sanctity away.

The Stance of the Oracle

It was at this critical, terrifying hour that Nandielath Govinda Menon (Govindamman), the anointed Oracle, stepped forwardn in a profound state of divine resolve.

With the roar of the deluge surrounding him, Govindamman took his ritual Staff (Vaal)—the symbol of the Goddess's power given to him by the Raja—and, with an act of immense will and faith, thrust it deep into the saturated earth at the edge of the temple grounds.

The Barrier of Grace

Govindamman stood firm, bracing against the flood’s fury, using his body and the Goddess's staff as an impenetrable barrier.

In a moment of pure, acknowledged miracle, the waters obeyed the Oracle's intervention. The relentless tide halted immediately, refusing to rise a single inch further. It was as though the force of nature itself recognized the divine authority standing on the earth. The raging flood could not cross the invisible boundary established by the faithful Oracle.

The temple was miraculously spared, its destruction averted. Thus, at the moment when physical calamity threatened the sacred seat of the Goddess, Govindamman's staunch sacrifice preserved the shrine of the Devi, forever confirming his role as the Protector and true steward of the Mother's domain.

വിനാശത്തിന്റെ സംവത്സരം 

കേരളത്തെ വിഴുങ്ങിയ ഒരു മഹാപ്രളയത്തിന്റെ കാലം. ആ വർഷം, ഇടിയുടെയും മിന്നലിന്റെയും അകമ്പടിയോടെ പെയ്തിറങ്ങിയ മഴ നാടിനെയാകെ മുക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞു. ഗ്രാമങ്ങളും പറമ്പുകളും ഒരു അനന്തമായ ജലപ്പരപ്പായി രൂപാന്തരപ്പെട്ടു.

പ്രളയത്തിന്റെ പ്രക്ഷുബ്ധ തരംഗങ്ങൾ കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂർ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ അമ്പലപ്പറമ്പിലേക്ക് ആഞ്ഞടിച്ചു. ഒരൊറ്റ കുത്തൊഴുക്കുകൂടി മതിയായിരുന്നു — ദേവിയുടെ പുരാതന സന്നിധിയെ എന്നെന്നേക്കുമായി ഇല്ലാതാക്കാൻ.

വെളിച്ചപ്പാടിന്റെ നിശ്ചലമായ നിലപാട് 

ആ നിർണ്ണായക നിമിഷത്തിൽ, നന്ദിയേലത്ത് ഗോവിന്ദമേനോൻ (ഗോവിന്ദമ്മാമൻ) മുന്നോട്ട് വന്നു. ഭ്രാന്തമായ ആവേശത്താലോ വെറും മനുഷ്യധൈര്യത്താലോ അല്ല, മറിച്ച് ദിവ്യമായ വിശ്വാസത്തിൻ്റെയും ഉറച്ച ബോധ്യത്തിൻ്റെയും ബലത്തിൽ.

അദ്ദേഹം കൈയിലെ ദേവിയുടെ വാളെടുത്ത്, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ അതിരിലെ നനഞ്ഞ മണ്ണിൽ അത് ശക്തിയായി ആഴത്തിൽ കുത്തിയിറക്കി.  ഭക്തരെല്ലാം ഇന്നും ഭക്തിയോടെ സ്മരിക്കുന്ന അത്ഭുതം അവിടെ സംഭവിച്ചു — പ്രളയജലം മുന്നോട്ട് ഗമിക്കാൻ ധൈര്യമില്ലാതെ നിശ്ചലമായി.

അങ്ങനെ, ദേവിയുടെ ശ്രീകോവിൽ മഹാപ്രളയത്തിൽനിന്ന് അത്ഭുതകരമായി രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. അന്നുമുതൽ, ഗോവിന്ദമ്മാമൻ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ സംരക്ഷകനെന്ന നിലയിൽ ഈ ചരിത്രത്തിൽ നിത്യമായി പതിഞ്ഞു.
